History of the Civil Pro Bono Family Law Project

Originally established as part of the Georgia Association of Black Women Attorneys Foundation, a tax-exempt 501(c)(3) Georgia corporation in 1987, CPB-FLP  began to operate as a separate tax-exempt 501(c)(3) Georgia corporation in May 2006. The program serves a diverse population of incarcerated mothers and their children. Through the program’s newly formed collaborations, CPB-FLP is expanding its services to include Spanish speaking attorneys. CPB-FLP’s client population also includes incarcerated mothers and children who are physically challenged. For example, program volunteers are assisting an incarcerated mother who is deaf.

Since its founding, CPB-FLP has assisted a diverse population of more than 3500 incarcerated mothers, women who have a combined total of more than 14,000 children. According to the Georgia Department of Corrections 2005 statistics 2683 women are incarcerated in Georgia’s prison system: 1,297 are Caucasian, 1,386 are minorities, 2,626 are mothers and 2592 are between 21 and 54 years old.
