Testimonial from Tracy Qualtrough (a former CPB-FLP Client)
I was an incarcerated mother, an inmate at Metro State Prison, serving 3 years. My husband had custody of our 2 young sons. He refused to bring my sons to visit me at the prison. I wrote my sons every week and called them once a week, but the telephone conversations were little more than “Hi Mom: By Mom.” I grew frustrated.
In 2000, I learned about the Civil Pro Bono Family Law Project (CPB-FLP) seminar at Metro. I attended. One of the CPB-FLP volunteer attorneys took my case. Initially, I had low expectations because prior to my incarceration I had spent several thousand dollars on legal representation and I hadn’t had any success. My CPB-FLP lawyer represented me at all my Family Law court hearings where I fought to enforce my visitation rights.
My fight to spend time with my children lasted 5 years, even after I was released from prison. The CPB-FLP lawyer remained committed to the case until the final ruling on June 1, 2005 when I succeeded in obtaining a judge’s order to prevent my ex-husband from moving to another state with my sons. Today, I’m employed and I share custody of my sons.
